Our Mission

Heartstone Guidance Center exists to provide compassionate, ethical, and genuinely neurodiversity-affirming mental health care.

We support autistic, ADHD, OCD, PDA, LGBTQIA+, traumatized, disabled, and otherwise marginalized people in understanding themselves, healing from harm, and building lives that honor who they are.

Our work is grounded in the belief that people do not need to become less themselves to deserve connection, dignity, safety, or belonging. We do not measure wellness by compliance, productivity, conventional behavior, or the ability to appear neurotypical.

Through affirming therapy, education, advocacy, and community, we work to create spaces where people can unmask, develop self-trust, access meaningful support, and move toward lives that are sustainable and authentically their own.

Our Values

Neurodiversity Is a Natural Part of Human Diversity

We understand autism, ADHD, PDA, and other neurodivergent ways of being as meaningful forms of human diversity—not character flaws, failures, or tragedies.

We recognize that neurodivergence can involve disability, distress, and significant support needs. Affirming neurodivergence does not require minimizing those realities. It means providing support without asking people to reject, hide, or become ashamed of who they are.

People Are the Experts on Their Own Experiences

We approach therapy as a collaborative relationship rather than a hierarchy. Clinical knowledge matters, but so do lived experience, cultural knowledge, bodily awareness, personal values, and self-understanding.

We listen carefully, remain curious, and resist assuming that a clinician automatically knows what is best for another person.

Autonomy Matters

Every person has the right to make meaningful choices about their body, identity, relationships, communication, treatment, and life.

We do not confuse obedience with progress or compliance with wellness. We support informed choice, consent, self-determination, and the right to say no.

Behavior Is Communication

We look beneath behavior rather than judging it at the surface.

Shutdowns, avoidance, withdrawal, distress, self-protective responses, difficulty initiating tasks, and intense emotional reactions often communicate unmet needs, overwhelm, fear, pain, sensory distress, trauma, or a lack of safety.

Our role is to understand what is happening. We do not punish, shame, or force someone into appearing more 'acceptable'.

Relationship Comes Before Performance

Healing happens through connection, trust, consistency, and being genuinely understood.

We value authentic therapeutic relationships over clinical distance or performative professionalism. Our clinicians are human beings, and our clients do not have to perform wellness, politeness, eye contact, productivity, positivity, or display organized executive function to receive care.

Authenticity and Unmasking Deserve Support

Masking can be a necessary survival strategy, particularly in environments that punish difference. We never pressure someone to unmask when doing so would be unsafe.

When a person chooses to explore unmasking, we support them in recognizing their needs, boundaries, sensory experiences, communication patterns, values, strengths, and authentic identity.

Care Must Be Individualized

There is no single correct way to communicate, regulate, participate in therapy, build relationships, or live a meaningful life.

We adapt therapy to the person rather than demanding that the person adapt to therapy. We welcome movement, silence, alternative communication, sensory supports, direct language, processing time, special interests, comfort objects, cameras off during telehealth, and other accommodations that make care more accessible.

Lived Experience Is Valuable Knowledge

Heartstone was created from lived experience. We value authenitic clinicians who bring not only education and professional skill, but also a meaningful and lived understanding of neurodivergence, disability, trauma, marginalization, and differences.

We believe lived experience can deepen empathy, insight, creativity, and connection when it is held with appropriate boundaries and ethical care.

Intersectionality Is Essential

Neurodivergence does not exist separately from race, gender, sexuality, disability, class, culture, religion, body size, family structure, or access to resources.

We affirm LGBTQIA+ people, including transgender and nonbinary people. We welcome diverse relationships and family structures, including polyamorous, ethically non-monogamous, and kink communities.

We are committed to anti-racist, anti-ableist, anti-oppressive, trauma-informed care and to continuing to examine the ways power and privilege affect clinical relationships.

Accessibility Is Part of Ethical Care

Access needs are not inconveniences or signs that someone is failing. They are part of being human.

We work to reduce unnecessary barriers, communicate clearly, offer reasonable flexibility, and create sensory-conscious, emotionally safer, and more understandable systems of care.

Clinician Well-Being Matters

At Heartstone neurodiversity-affirming care starts with neurodivergent clinicians.

We reject the idea that therapists must sacrifice their health, identities, or humanity to prove their professionalism. We value sustainable caseloads, honest communication, accommodations, flexibility, boundaries, and support during periods of burnout or disability.

Care for clinicians strengthens the care they are able to offer others.

Accountability Is an Expression of Care

Affirmation does not mean avoiding responsibility. We take ethical practice, clinical competence, confidentiality, documentation, continuing education, and professional accountability seriously.

We strive to respond to concerns with openness rather than defensiveness. When harm occurs, we believe in listening, acknowledging impact, repairing what can be repaired, and learning from the experience.

Growth Should Never Require Self-Rejection

We believe people can heal, learn, change, and build new skills without being taught that their authentic selves are defective.

Our goal is not to make people appear more typical. Our goal is to help people experience greater safety, agency, connection, self-understanding, and access to a life that works for them.
